COVID-19 - IOM3 continues to follow Government advice on the coronavirus outbreak. As a result, visits to our Library will only be available by appointment, via Linda Dawes from November 2020. Please understand this to protect our members and team. We may still be able to assist with some information so please ask using our contact form (select "Library" category).

Our library has recently been rehoused in The Boilerhouse, Grantham.

All our library collections from different sites and predecessor bodies have been brought together in our Grantham centre. Once the Boilerhouse reopens to visitors, you will be able to peruse all our holdings in one location. As well as books, there are conference proceedings, mining and metallurgy journals, rubber reports, maps, copper statistics, and other valuable information.

Non-members - you are welcome too, for reference or research (though not borrowing rights, and if you're not a student or historian we may charge a visitor's fee).

What can we do for you?

Sometimes free, sometimes for a charge that frees up your time, we can:

  • Lend books (and some reports, maps etc.)
  • Photocopy articles and papers →
  • Help answer general enquiries, or provide a referral service
  • Compile reference lists in some subjects, or advise where else to try
  • Tell you what's new in the mining library via IMM Abstracts →
  • Compile data or statistics for you
  • Try to answer your questions about the history of materials, mining and the Institute

If you're a member and live in the UK or EU, we'll lend you most things from the library including reports and maps. We charge postage, plus a nominal amount per item to cover handling.

Literature searches

We can advise you on databases covering materials science and engineering or can carry out a literature seach for a fee.

Data compilation

For minerals industry enquirers in particular, we can also compile statistics, company information and production figures.

Conference proceedings

Selected proceedings and papers from events organised by the Institute are available through our Library Services team.

IOM3 members have access to Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS) conference proceedings via this page.

You may acquire British and worldwide standards online from the BSI - BSI Catalogue. We have a limited number of older standards (mainly minerals and mining) available for loan.

I got excited at the opportunity to recover these important references as I am currently revising my book. It is great to know that I can access some of the rare publications of the Institute!
